Red Light for Relief
Several years ago I had a patient who fell and heard 5 distinct pops of her rib cage. Immediately she felt excruciating pain. The area was sensitive to the touch, caused difficulty with breathing and she could barely move. There is nothing that can be done for bruised or broken ribs, so I felt lucky to be equipped with the perfect tool to relieve her suffering. It was a panel of near infrared lights.
Afters a 9-minute treatment sitting in front of this panel, the pain was remarkably reduced and continued to improve over the next few hours. She came in for 2 additional 9-minute treatments that week. The pain went away and never returned. I remember how grateful she was to be completely out of pain with very little effort and expense. In addition, she mentioned that this happened to her 3 other times. She said that with each injury it took 6 months to recover. Her last comment was that this fall was the most severe injury of the 4 falls. Both sides of her ribs were hurt, yet it only took 1 week of 3 short treatments to completely resolve it. She called it a miracle.
Recently, another patient introduced me to a Near-Infrared tool that she uses at home. She called it a ‘game-changer’. This device not only uses Near-Infrared frequencies, it also uses red light technology. Dermatologists have used red light therapy for decades to help with skin conditions. My patient loves it for helping her with any type of pain, and it aids with healing skin issues, cuts and bruises. With a toddler son and another on the way, there seems to be unlimited needs for this progressive tech discovery.
To understand how this works, we need to look at how the body heals itself. After an injury or illness, fluids from inflammation are present. To clean up the mess and move out the debris, cells require a boost of energy. This is why people take supplements. They know they need extra help to drive a healing effect. Exposure to Near Infrared and red light stimulates cells to produce the additional energy needed. The light penetrates just below the skin and activates cellular activity to clear out toxins and acids. This process eliminates inflammation and pain, especially if directed right onto the impacted site. For achy joints from arthritis or achy muscles from overuse, applying these beams of light stimulates your cells to heal the area.
Red light and Near Infrared increase collagen production. Collagen is a protein that acts like a building block for skin, muscles, and connective tissues. Raising collagen levels helps repair tendons, ligaments, bone and cartilage. Collagen is also part of the skin, which is why it helps with cuts and bruises.
For women, applying the light to the abdomen will help give relief from menstrual cramping. The red lights are soothing and relaxing for nerves which also helps improve sleep. Additionally, phones, computers and new light bulbs produce blue light. Exposure to the opposite color is rebalancing
Near Infrared and red light wavelengths are in a similar range, so they are easy to combine. They work very differently from Far Infrared saunas. In fact, water molecules create a barrier to Near infrared penetration. Using a sauna that induces sweat is counterproductive in Near-Infrared effectiveness. I’ll explain the science and details of Far-infrared benefits in another article.
