What Do You Believe?
Meeting people can be an interesting experience because if we pay attention and listen closely, we can learn what someone subconsciously believes. It’s not only apparent by the words they use, but also by how they act, or the manner that they live their life. I am going to share 3 medical stories that provide insight into what each person believed.
Story #1: A young boy was diagnosed with an inoperable brain cancer. He was seeing a counselor to help him through this difficult diagnosis. During their relationship, the boy described the tumor as something like the Death Star from Star Wars. He imagined himself as a Storm Trooper, and each night before going to sleep, he would visualize attacking the Death Star with his laser tag-like gun. One day he came in for his weekly session and told the therapist that he succeeded at destroying the Death Star the night before. All the remained was a white shadow in his brain. Soon thereafter, he was scheduled for a CT Scan to follow up on his brain tumor. To the doctor’s amazement, the tumor was gone. They noticed a small shadow on the scan where the tumor was originally located.
Story #2: A woman in her 70’s I believe, was scheduled for surgery to get her gallbladder removed. After the procedure, the doctor came out from the operating room to speak with the patient’s daughter. He said that they did not remove the mother’s gallbladder because when they opened her up, she was riddled with metastatic cancer. There was nothing they could do, so they closed her up. The daughter knew this news would have a devastating effect on her mother’s psyche and quality of life. So she asked the doctor not to tell her mother the bad news. The doctor agreed, and told the mother that they did not need to remove the gallbladder. That woman lived a normal healthy long life for years after that operation, as if she never had any cancer.
Story #3: In the 5th episode of the 3rd season of TV series The Chosen, I was struck deeply by one of the stories from the Bible. There was a woman who had a problem with vaginal bleeding. She was rejected by the people around her and even her own family as being “unclean”. She went to many doctors without any resolution. When she heard about Jesus and his special healing abilities, she knew he was her solution. The Prophet had gained a lot of attention by this time, and was often surrounded by crowds of people. The woman kept saying to herself, (I’m paraphrasing here) “if I could just touch one thread of his clothing, I will be healed”. With determination and will, she did touch Jesus’ garment and instantly felt healed. Jesus, in that same moment, felt the energy leave His body. He stopped immediately and asked repeatedly, “who touched me?” The woman reluctantly answered that it was her. Jesus walked to her and bent down to where she was sitting. His comment to her was, “it was not me that healed you. It was your faith that healed you”.
These stories have been tucked away in my brain for many years. In my practice, I recognize that a patient’s beliefs are crucial for them to heal. I have written several stories of those who had faith that they could restore their health, regardless of what they have been told by someone else. In my first article on Substack called “Phantom Odor” I described a woman who despite all her failed attempts for more than 10 years with her ‘incurable’ condition, she knew in her heart that I was the one who could help her. In 4 months she got rid of her issue. I cannot remember all of the patients I have treated with similar stories before we worked together. If you believe that you can heal, I am convinced after countless stories I’ve experienced, that having faith, some medical direction and effort, that almost anything can be reversed and healed. Your body wants to heal itself. By clearing out the causes, taking the right actions, nutrients and focus of mind, you can reach your goals. So as the title states, what do you believe you can resolve with absolute faith?
